Vybz Kartel At UWI: “No One Ever Died From Lightening Their Skin” [Video]

An unapologetic Vybz “Michael Cake Soap Jackon” Kartel delivered good on his promise of a lecture at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona last Thursday evening about his life and art.

Vybz Kartel again let it be known he is the most popular dancehall deejay currently, by pulling a large crowd at the UWI Undercroft.

Vybz Kartel touch on a number of topics, most notably his skin bleaching and the controversial use of cake soap.

Vybz Kartel told the over 1000 patrons in attendance that, “More than 10,000 people a year die from lung cancer, but no one has ever died from lightening their skin.”

“Bleaching today is not the same as it was 25 years ago. I maintain that today we are a much prouder race than in the past. And now we set trends. So when I do it it’s just style,” Kartel added.

Vybz Kartel attribute one of the main reason to lighten his skin was his fascination with tattoos as a result of his idol Tupac Shakur. But that don’t stop some patrons from flagging the deejay morals.

When ask about his morals and influence on society, Vybz Kartel maintained that he is not a social, political or religious leader and as such he is not in a position to teach morals.
