Buju Banton Legal Team Responds To US Government

Incarcerated reggae star Buju Banton will not quite in the fight for his freedom from Federal lockup.

Buju Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, is currently serving a 10-year sentence in a Florida prison, after he was convicted on three counts of drug trafficking charges last year.

Late last year, Banton’s legal team headed by David Markus filed on appeal in a Georgia Court contesting the grounds of his conviction. According to documents filed, Markus argued that the prosecutors failed start the trial within a 70 day window; a right guaranteed under the Sixth Amendment in the American constitution. Additionally, Markus said there was not enough evidence to convict Banton on the charges.

The court dismissed the appeal last month, stating that prosecutor James Preston brought a legitimate case against the reggae star. In their response to Banton’s appeal, prosecutors noted that “Banton’s words and actions, in recorded conversations and a videotaped meeting in a Sarasota, Florida, warehouse where Banton tasted some cocaine, revealed the singer ‘eagerly brokered’ a drug deal between a friend and undercover government agents.

David Markus filed a cross appeal last week, arguing that the document did not refute their failure to prove Buju’s guilt.

Markus reiterate that his client was entrapped by a paid government informant and that the artiste’s right to a speedy trial was violated.

Markus added that Buju Banton’s acquittal on the gun charge was the correct one.
