Sitcom Pioneer Sherman Hemsley Dead At Age 74

One of sitcom’s most recognized pioneers, Sherman Hemsley, is dead at age 74.

According to reports, Hemsley was found dead in his home in El Paso, California earlier today. TMZ reported that his cause of death is not known but suspect to be natural causes. His body was discovered by his nurse.

Sherman Hemsley is credited for bringing the famous character George Jefferson to life.

Hemsley first played the cranky George Jefferson in the television series All in the Family, and then in the spin off sitcom The Jeffersons. The Jeffersons aired for a decade from 1975 through to 1985.

Sherman Hemsley was among the first black actors to pioneer leading role in successful sitcoms in the 1970s and 80s.
